Thank you so much Jessica! You know, initially I was going to zoom in much closer on the peacock so to have it be more about him on the altar, but eventually I realized I wanted him to have more space and light around him. I like the idea of a big imposing church and a small peacock who seems comfortable in that place, almost as if he was always meant to be there. I also wanted this space to be more finished and polished then some of the other interiors I've done. These images develop very organically and I usually go with my gut and intentionally try not to over think them too much. I'm always very intrigued and moved to hear how people respond to them and what they see. I feel like I can learn about my images through the thoughts of others! Also, I'm very flattered about the Friedrich reference--I find his work very beautiful and profound. Thank you!

I enjoy this greatly. Not only because the forms in a peacock's tail and also the known colors of its plumage mimic the form and color of a cathedral... but it is thought provoking, unusual. While wolves as seen in your other impressive piece are known somewhat to be gothic creatures and married to that myth telling peacocks are not, as far as I know. One can weave a meaning and a story around this in many directions. The peacock is small in contrast to the immensity of the building yet I do not sense weakness. It holds back it's secret splendor, its fanning tail remains closed... like a secret. It doesn't confront the immensity of the building fully armed, instead, it seems to observe, and, unabashed, watch from the place of greatest honor, the altar. The altar is generally associated with ceremony, even ceremonial death in the past, yet the bird seems unstressed, fearless. We have seen birds indoors before, panicked, searching for the exit with a near death fever... this bird seems untroubled. I like to imagine that it knows its perfection outshines the efforts of this man made palace. That it observes our plumage with serene detached interest. We do not hold the bird captive, instead, it holds us captive, as it inspires our imaginations to build and to create... to emulate a beauty we can never truly capture. Merely visit. The absence of any human being leads one to wonder where the people have gone… if indeed a strange time has arrived where our eternal structures remain abandoned and are instead infiltrated by that which is more eternal than our art… nature, God… and a beauty beyond our capability to emulate.
