ONE-TO-ONE ART MENTORING
OVERVIEW:
Individualized one hour sessions where I adapt my teaching and guidance to your own abilities, calendar and workflow.
Sessions will be offered individually or in a package format depending on what is desired.
I will work with you to provide the type of session that is most productive and inspiring for you.
ABOUT the PROGRAM:
Working one-to-one as a mentor was always one of my favorite parts of teaching. I loved to go deeper with someone in exploring how to make a project come to fruition. Sometimes it would be over the course of one single painting; other times it would be over the course of multiple pieces leading to a final exhibition or a publication of a book.
In the art mentoring format, you can choose just how you would like to work with me. It could be through direct lessons where we would focus on developing certain skills in painting or drawing or it could be more as a guide to provide feedback and critique with your own works and project ideas.
As I have been teaching online for almost two years now, I have found that the online format is perfectly suited for individualized artistic mentorship. Through live online meetings and accompanying notes and materials, I could provide as much instruction, guidance, feedback and encouragement as an individual wants, all structured around their own schedule and goals.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
After I receive the initial sign up, I will contact you within 24 hours by email to set up a time to meet. I will inquire further about what you would like to focus on during the mentoring session. If you are still not quite certain about that, I am happy to provide suggestions for a potential curriculum and direction that we could go in.
I would then set up a private Zoom link just for our session, send it to you and we would go from there!
Before and after each session I may provide materials and notes to accompany the session. The idea is whether it's technical work, conceptual or just some insight on how to push a project through I will be a resource for you to my fullest abilities. We would set benchmarks together and over the course of the mentorship, we will work together to reach those benchmarks.
EXAMPLES OF 1-1 ART MENTORING
Here are some examples of how I might work with you.
Example 1: Private Instruction
Whether you are just curious with watercolor or drawing or you are ready to take the next step you may be looking for a more direct instruction that could focus on your own pace, interests and schedule. I would discuss with you where you are at with watercolor and where you would like to go and be a teacher/guide/resource for your development in watercolor painting.
Example 2: Conception to Production of a Project
Let's say that you have an idea to illustrate a children's book or graphic novel. You have a story in mind, but need to bounce around the ideas on how to approach the illustrations and design.
Over the course of our mentorship, I would discuss with you different styles and tones you could approach with your book. We would outline how you could layout your story and I would provide insight on what tools and approaches would work best for the type of imagery you'd like to create . I would give feedback and structure as to to the production of the illustrations and help in putting the project together as a presentable piece for submissions or production.
Example 3: Processing through a Creative Block
Sometimes we are just not quite sure about what we want to do with our art. We have an itch to do something but it's not clear as to where to start, which direction to move and just what our benchmarks even could be. This is a very natural and healthy part of the creative process. Often just having someone who is invested that you can bounce ideas off of is what you need to get the ball rolling.
In such a case I would become a resource for you to help nourish your creative energies to their fullest capacity. This could come in the form of personalized exercises, sketch booking projects or guidance sessions about potential directions you could go. After working with hundreds of students over the years, this is truly one of the areas I have experience in, as it is a place in our creative process that we have all been in.
SHARED MENTORSHIP
In case you are interested in having more personalized mentoring, but would like to share that experience with a partner or friend, I am also accepting Shared Mentoring. This format would allow for more than one individual to take the class and in so doing build towards project goals and ambitions together. If you are interested in a Shared mentorship, please contact me in the form below.

Testimonials
Jun is one of the most dedicated and inspiring teachers and artists I have ever worked with. I first studied drawing and watercolor with him at an intensive in-person program, the Aegean Center of the Fine Arts. A decade later, when the pandemic disrupted "normal" life in so many ways, it also created a wonderful silver lining -- the opportunity to reconnect and learn with Jun once again.
Jun is extremely attentive and responsive to my individual goals, and meticulously prepares for each class -- we look at a wide array of images and choose the one that inspires me, but also offers a way to learn new techniques and advance my skills. He shares photos and drawings beforehand, so we can maximize our time painting together during the session. Between sessions, Jun shares video demos so I can continue to paint and build my artistic practice.
It's hard to articulate how much joy it has brought me to dust off my watercolors. I have started to see the world as a painting again, observing more keenly the light on the trees and the ripples in the water. I have started to experience the calm, mesmerizing zen of getting lost in a painting and emerging an hour later, stepping back and thinking, 'Wow, I did that?'
Jun strikes a perfect balance between challenging me and meeting me where I am. He provides detailed feedback and makes sure that I learn something new in every drawing and watercolor we embark upon. Whether you are seeking to pick up a hobby, old or new, or build a portfolio, he makes you a more confident and creative artist each day.
