 ABOUT THE COURSE

Watercolor: Nature Studies is twelve part program designed for painters that are interested in investigating the fascinating and complex forms, shapes, colors and textures of the natural world around us.

In this course we will look a range of different subjects, be they plants, flowers, trees, fungi, insects, fish, birds reptiles and birds and to explore their individual characteristics through watercolor. In so doing my aim is that participants will have more confidence and expressiveness in their painting, through the inspiration of such wondrous subjects.

Over the course of twelve lessons, we will spend time looking at how to render different surface textures such as fur, scales, bark, moss, and stone through watercolor. We will consider the essential shapes and forms of a variety of creatures, and study how to convey how light and shadow, color and texture. Students will build up a portfolio of works that will show not just a multitude of striking natural studies, but will convey a personal hand and touch of the artist in how the pieces are rendered and expressed.

The recordings are from the live online course that ran from September to December, 2021. The unedited videos and accompanying course Padlet feature the art, conversations and feedback of each recorded class session in full.

Testimonials

"Jun-Pierre is masterful. It is rare to find an instructor who excels at both his craft as well as a strong passion to teach what he knows in such a motivating and comfortable way. He genuinely honors the varied interests and advances the varied skills levels of each participant. He presents interesting techniques and relevant information in a way that makes art accessible and motivating. His kindness and generosity put me at ease immediately. I am a more comfortable and confident artist because of him."

-Michelle G.

"I have signed up for multiple online painting tutorials with some nominal success. When I found Jun and took his live online class my drawing/painting skills improved more rapidly. Having the live classes, interacting with like minded artists is what makes Jun’s classes work and you will see improvement in your art practice. I can’t wait to taking another class with Jun."

-Sheila A.

"Jun is a remarkable teacher, bringing to everything he teaches a breadth of knowledge that meets each student where they are. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned painter he is always able to challenge and encourage and teach to any question that emerges, taking the time to demonstrate technique, construction of an image and beautifully illustrate and underline the necessary skills needed for painting with watercolor and ink."

-Cassie B.

"It's a wonderful class, and not for nothing Jun-Pierre's students keep coming back for more. His explanations are clear and concise; his answers to questions are thoughtful, patient, and knowledgeable; his demos are a joy to watch; and his critique is always constructive and never feels like criticism. He designs a strong curriculum and sticks to it, so you get exactly what you paid for...It was totally worth it, and I will be going back for more."

-Olga G.

"Jun is not only an excellent artist, but also an insightful person and instructor. He can make the most out of different personalities from around the world, so they work full time in and outdoors, as if they just enjoy life through their brushstrokes, no matter how mature these strokes can be."

“I am still amazed by the idea that it is possible for a complete beginner like I was (I never painted nor drew before) to learn to get confident with the watercolour and drawing within such a short period.
I give this course my best recommendations.”

—Jona Joensen

" Jun's inspiring and motivating summer workshop which combines studio practice and painting trips to different places on such a beautiful island gave me a powerful head start in pursuing my studies in painting."

-Nausicaa Papathanasiou

"Jun's a fabulous artist, a fabulous draftsman and a fabulous tesacher (and a great guy too). He guided us step by step through the watercolor techniques. He teaches in a crips clear, well-structured, methodical way. His classes are packed with information, knowledge and inside tips, everything adjusted to the level and demands of the individual student, and at the same time they are great fun. Jun's always going the extra mile and super generous in sharing his skills and experience."

"Despite my inexperience, Jun was always calm, patient and willing to lend gentle criticism or suggestions. Our workshop family was full of wonderful, supportive people and I know we all learned a lot from each other. Once you experience the Aegean Center with a group of people, it feels as though you share a secret and even if you told somebody else, there is no way the could possibly understand just how special of a place it is."

—Jona Joensen

“The course kick started a whole new means of expression for me. I wanted to learn to watercolor so that I could bring life to architectural/ industrial design drawings that I had prior been working on on the computer. Jun taught me the skills I was looking for in this workshop, which I now use on a daily basis in my career. In terms of the experience of the workshop-the word heaven does not suffice. You hop from one unimaginably beautiful spot to the next painting the scenery of a very special island. Monasteries in the hills, expansive vistas, boats by the water, rocky landscapes, and white stucco villas were all inspiring places to learn the craft of water coloring. Time spent in class learning technique and skill adds a perfect balance to the experience. You land at the end of each day feeling fulfilled by the people you have spent time with, proud of the things you halearned, and inspired by this paradise."
